Fort Jennings Dam Removal & Stream Renovation Project
Two in-stream concrete structures exist on the Auglaize River in Village of Fort Jennings near a park. One structure is a low dam created by repeatedly pouring concrete and asphalt into the stream (during low flow) to build up a pool near the village park. The second is a bridge that was installed and then repeatedly reinforced by armoring the riverbanks and riverbed using concrete and asphalt. Both structures cause flooding and erosion issues in the park, and the dam creates a pool that stagnates in the summer reducing water quality. The village seeks funding to remove these structures and restore the river.
The dam is located at approximately (40.9049, -84.2933) and the bridge at (40.9047, -84.2952) on Village and private property (Putnam County Parcels 170630300000, 170630400000, 170620600000). This project will remove the dam, bridge supports, bank armor, and streambed armor from the waterway and restore the banks at the village park where these structures will be removed. Riffles will be installed in place of the dam and bridge which will provide both improved water quality and better habitat for fish and other aquatic organisms.
The project includes using grant funds to contract all parts of the removal of the dam, removal of bridge and associated in-stream concrete and asphalt, and restore the riverbanks –including dam deconstruction, bridge support deconstructions, creation of riffles, restoration of adjacent embankments, dam materials disposal, sediment disposal, organisms relocation and surveying, and creation of associated designs, concepts, and permits to support the removal of the dam, asphalt, and concrete structures. This project is funded through a grant from H2Ohio Rivers Initiative via the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
