The Milwaukee Department of Public Works has the greatest impact of any city department on daily life in Milwaukee.

We are responsible for the design, maintenance, and operation of streets, sidewalks, alleys, bridges, sewers, water mains, underground conduit, telecommunications services, traffic signals, and street lighting for the City of Milwaukee that covers more than 95 square miles; 221 city buildings, a fleet of over 1,500 vehicles, 476 acres of boulevards and green space, and 200,000 street trees.

60 HYDRANT ALTERATIONS, by qualified City of Milwaukee licensed and bonded contractors. Hydrant alterations will be at scattered locations throughout the Milwaukee Water Works Service area. Hydrant alterations may include, but are not limited to, the procurement of all permits, excavation, traffic control, erosion control, saw-cutting, removal of existing hydrant, restraint of existing hydrant branch, installation of new hydrant assembly, backfilling of the excavation(s), restoration of pavement, curb and gutter, and walk, and final cleanup of the work site. Aggregate slurry backfill shall be required for all excavations. Aggregate slurry backfill shall be as specified in 4.6.6 of the Water Main Installation Specifications. In paved areas, the slurry must be placed to the pavement subgrade. In grass areas, slurry must be placed to 6” below the finished grade and topsoil must be placed to the surface. Includes any necessary hydroexcavation. Temporary and permanent restoration requirements will be at the discretion of MWW. All work shall be in compliance with the City of Milwaukee Rules and Regulations Governing Water Service, the City of Milwaukee Water Service Piping Specifications, and the City of Milwaukee Special Provisions for Lead Service Line Replacement. Prices from all bidders will be kept on file. If the successful bidder fails to fulfill the contract requirements, an agreement with a secondary contractor may be pursued for work at specific emergency locations.

Any hazardous material will need to be removed and disposed of according to state and federal regulations. All furniture must be removed and disposed of and the entire space swept free of debris.

A. This project consists of permanently abandoning a well that is located in our Robert Anderson Tower basement. The well is 1834 feet deep. There is wood floating in water at around 319 feet deep. The wood will need to be removed per WDNR. Additionally, the 12-inch diameter ungrouted liner would either need to be removed, shot, or ripped prior to abandoning the well (ss. NR 811.13(4)(a) & NR 811.13(4)(d), Wis. Adm. Code). The well must be abandoned per ss. NR 811.13(4)(a) & NR 811.13(4)(d), Wis. Adm. Code. Once completed, the contractor would then need to submit a well filling and sealing report in accordance with (s. NR 811.13(8), Wis. Adm. Code).
