KSU East Liverpool Nursing Program Relocation Study
Kent State University is soliciting Statements of Qualifications from qualified architectural firms to provide professional design and planning services for a phased renovation and space optimization project at the Kent State East Liverpool campus. Selection will also be the basis for a future contract to provide full A/E services for the phased construction.
Purinton Hall, originally constructed in 1915 and acquired by the University in 1968, currently houses classrooms and science laboratories supporting a range of academic programs. In 2024, the facility underwent infrastructure upgrades to accommodate the relocation of advanced nursing and occupational therapy laboratories from the Mary Patterson Building, addressing increasing demand for healthcare education across the state of Ohio.
As part of its ongoing strategic planning, the University is aligning campus facilities with current and projected enrollment trends. This project represents a phased initiative supported by capital funding.
The selected firm will provide comprehensive planning services for the consolidation and relocation of nursing laboratory and simulation lab functions and related academic spaces, encompassing approximately 10,000 gross square feet. Scope of services is expected to include programming, space planning, phasing and feasibility analysis, and design documentation to support future capital-funded construction project(s).
Firms should demonstrate experience with higher education facilities, healthcare or clinical learning environments including nursing simulation labs, physical and occupational therapy laboratories, and phased project delivery.
Interested parties may attend a pre-proposal meeting at 11:00am Wednesday May 6, 2026 in Room 102 Harbourt Hall, 615 Loop Road, Kent, Ohio 44242.

Ashtabula Stocker Hall C-wing Critical Deferred Maintenance
Kent State University at Ashtabula Campus was founded in 1958 and is part of the Kent State University’s 8 campus system, which sits on over 80 acres overlooking Lake Erie. It offers state-of-the-art learning across its four-building footprint, including that of Stocker Hall, built in 1965.
Stocker Hall is home to most of the educational programs and classes offered at Kent State Ashtabula. The 109,000 square foot building is heavily utilized and consists of the “A wing” student services, the “B wing” Auditorium and Gymnasium and the “C wing” classroom spaces. It has undergone transformational capital improvements throughout the past decade through several phases, including the enhancement of student-focused spaces and learning environments.
The focus of this project will be on the 30,920 sq. ft. C wing of Stocker Hall. The deferred maintenance project will address the failing HVAC pneumatic controls and dual duct infrastructure that is original to the construction of the C wing. The new design shall include modern and reliable digital HVAC controls base on Kent State standards, as well as an updated HVAC system, including mixing boxes and ductwork appropriate for the current space usages throughout the C wing. This project will also address the lack of critical life safety infrastructure in the C wing by extending the fire suppression system for proper coverage and evaluating the replacement of the emergency generator. The deferred maintenance project will parallel a separate but concurrent C wing space renovation project.
Interested parties may attend a pre-proposal meeting at Tuesday April 7, 2026 at 10:00 am in Room 102 Harbourt Hall, 615 Loop Road, Kent, Ohio 44242.

LCM Fire Alarm Replacement
Liquid Crystal Materials (LCM) is an 82,100 square feet fully sprinklered building. It houses the Advanced Materials and Liquid Crystal Institute and is home to both research and instructional facilities. This project is for a complete replacement of the Fire Alarm system to include all conduit, wire, devices, permit, inspections, etc. The existing Edwards fire alarm system is to be completely replaced with a new system including everything required for a complete code compliant system such as a new Main Fire Alarm Control Panel, flow switches, tamper switches, pull stations, smoke detectors, heat detectors, duct detectors, and voice addressable notification devices. Once the new system is installed and fully operational the old system must be completely removed and properly disposed.
Interested parties may attend a pre-proposal meeting on Thursday, December 11, 2025 10:00am in Room 102 Harbourt Hall, 615 Loop Road, Kent, Ohio 44242.

Stark Campus Chiller Plant Replacement
The existing chilled water system located in the Campus Center Building at Kent State University Stark is over 20 years old and requires replacement to ensure reliable and efficient cooling for 6 buildings on the Stark Campus. The system contains two (2) 300-ton chillers and one (1) 400-ton chiller, each with an equivalently sized cooling tower, and operates as a Primary/Secondary system. The replacement equipment will be more energy efficient through direct equipment replacements and improved variable-speed pumping, valves and controls to ensure the most cost-effective production and delivery of the chilled water utility.
The existing central chilled water equipment is beyond its service life and is increasingly becoming difficult to maintain and source replacement parts, most specifically for the cooling towers. The existing equipment is no longer considered energy efficient and frequently has service reliability issues. The replacement of the central chilled water equipment will improve energy efficiency and savings by not only replacing antiquated equipment but also installing a controls system to more closely control and monitor system function in addition to addressing deferred maintenance associated with an aging system.
It is expected that the Central Chiller Plant Replacement project will be phased based on the available capital funding and prioritized against the most critical areas needing replacement in addition to equipment availability and lead times. This project will be funded through a combination of state capital and local funding.
